Top Cut Comics runs Sanctioned Modified Pokemon Tournaments on Saturdays, with the occasional exception of when there is a YuGiOh Regionals at the store.
*click for detail info

(Registration opens at noon)
Our Weekly Tournaments are free to enter, and they are sanctioned. This means that they do count towards your Play!Pokemon points, 1 point per month up to 12 per year.

The core of Pokémon Organized Play is our sanctioned tournaments, where players can compete on a regular basis to build your rating & ranking! The Tournaments is more for competitive play, where players compete against other players, and depending on how many players we have, will play in three, four or five 30 minute(+3 turns) rounds of play against a different opponent each round. Tournament players should be those who already know how to play the Pokemon Card Game, and have their own 60-card Modified decks. If they do not yet have a Sanctioned Pokemon Organized Play ID card, we will gladly provide one for them. Currently we have been having between 18 and 30 players each week.

The sets legal in the New Modified Format wasbe updated as of July 1, 2011. The New Modified format is HeartGold SoulSilver -on. Players may not use cards from Pokémon sets prior to HeartGold SoulSilver, with the exception of basic Energy cards and any cards that were reprinted in Modified legal sets. Please make sure you're ready with a legal deck and review the legal sets for the Modified Format here. (the new link from Pokemon Organized Play's website will be posted shortly)

The Modified format for the 2011–2012 tournament season contains cards from the following setsHGSS-on format change as of July 1st, 2011

HGSS - NEX

DEX ............ Dark Explorers.................. is now legal ............ Dark Explorers symbol

If you'd like to print out the above image, click here. The image that will print on a regular size sheet of paper and will have this size as well as a smaller size on it so that you can cut it out to put in a sleeve in your binder or with your cards.

In addition, expansion sets are expected to be released on a regular schedule, averaging four new sets per calendar year. Cards from these new releases are made legal for tournament play the day that the set is released for regular retail sale, with the standard exception for pre-release tournaments.

With the exception of basic Energy cards and previously printed cards that appear in Modified-legal sets, players may not use cards from Pokémon sets prior to HeartGold SoulSilver. Players using previously printed cards that appear in Modified-legal sets must play those cards using the wording of the most recent printing of the card. In the event of significant changes to a card's text, players will be required to provide an external reference of the most recent printing.

If you'd like to see a list of all the Trainer Cards in the current HGSS-on format, our Judge Bob W has them in a nice list for you here. (note: this still needs to be updated with the newest sets since B&W... working on that for ya!)

Be sure to check the new Black & White Rulebook and the updated Rule Changes as of the release date of the Black & White set, as well as any TCG Errata, as found on the Main Pokemon website in the Rules & Resources section.

Of course if you have any questions at all as to if your deck is Tourney ready or not, please feel free to stop in a few minutes early and have us check over your deck for you. Starter decks are always available at the store, as well as card sleeves, dice, damage counters, booster packs, and many other accessories to make your gaming experience fun!

Want to use a good Decklist Maker to print out a decklist?

You don't need a decklist for our Weekly Tournaments, but you do for Premier Events, so here's a link to a wonderful Decklist maker at PokeGym that really makes it easy to do your decklist ahead of time... just click on the drop down menu to make your selections, then print it out and bring it in! This software was created to help make it much easier to correctly fill out tournament deck lists, helping avoid errors and costly penalties. Just fill in the blanks from the drop down menu, then when you're done, print it out! Very easy!

Top Cut Comics has the Pokemon League on Saturdays from 3:30 until 5:30 pm, following our tournament. Occasionally they will be on Sunday if a YuGiOh Regionals is held at the store
* click here for our schedule details

Each season runs approximately 6 weeks and is free to anyone who would like to join.

The League time is less structured than the Tournament time, and is recommended for those who are newer to the game or those who more interested in trading cards, deckbuilding and earning promos in a more casual format. If you need to learn how to play, let us know and we can help!

Pokémon League provides a nearby place for you to get together with other fans of both the Pokémon Trading Card Game and the Pokémon video games to have some fun. Using your own cards and Pokémon DS games, you can play, trade, and even earn cool prizes! The best part is that you can do all of this with other Pokémon players who love collecting and playing just as much as you do.

Even if you don’t know all the rules of the game, at a league you can learn game basics and, in no time, perfect your strategy! Joining a league is the best way to hone your skills to compete in Pokémon tournaments—from Battle Roads all the way up to the World Championships.

The Pokémon TCG League is a great way for players of all ages to get together and hone their skills (and decks) in a casual setting. League members are rewarded for playing games, win or lose. The more you play, the more you earn! The 2010-2011 league cycle is divided into five seasons, each of which lasts about five weeks and represents one of the Pokéathlon .

During the span of the Trainer League, players will earn organized play exclusive promo cards. Click here to see more information on the current season of the Pokemon League from the OP Website!

We're currently in the Jet Season Apr 30, 2012 to Jun 03, 2012

Next Season: The Freeze Season

Be sure to set up your Trainer Club account at Pokemon.Com! It helps to ensure you'll get the Promo Items for the League, and also so you'll earn your Play Point for the season!

You can do fun things like this... choose your own Trainer image, get special backgrounds and items, display your favorite Pokemon, play games, watch episodes... all kinds of fun things!

Here's my Trainer, and my current favs... how about yours?

I let you sleep in this time, so don't be late! ~_^

Either Top 2 or Top 4 Finals after Main Event with
Prizes for 1st - 4th in each of the 3 age groups

Plus Door Prizes, Side Events and more! Don't miss your chance to shine!

This Premier tournament is FREE to enter, so why not come join us in Madison and test your skills!

What do I need to know about this special tournament?

The tournament is run using the Modified Constructed Format (HeartGold SoulSilver through Dark Explorers) and Age Modified Swiss pairings. Be sure to check the new Black & White Rulebook and the updated Rule Changes as of the release date of the Black & White set, as well as any TCG Errata, as found on the Main Pokemon website in the Rules & Resources section. The number of Swiss rounds run will depend on total attendance at the event, most likely 3 - 6 rounds, in the new format, '30 minutes + 3 turns', and you'll play different players for each of the Rounds. Some newer players often mistakenly think that if they lose their first match, they're out, but that's not the case, only in the Finals.. After the main event, we'll post the Standings, and up to the Top 4 ranked players will play Single Elimination (best 2 out of 3 in 1 hour's time) until we have a winner in each of the 3 age groups.

Decklists will be required... I'll have them there for you to fill out there at the event, or you can print it out ahead of time. Here's a link to a wonderful Decklist maker that really makes it easy to do your decklist ahead of time... just click on the drop down menu to make your selections, then print it out and bring it in! This software was created to help make it much easier to correctly fill out tournament deck lists, helping avoid errors and costly penalties. Just fill in the blanks from the drop down menu, then when you're done, print it out! Very easy! Either way is fine. Just be sure to be there early enough to get them filled out and turned in before 10:45am, because you must have a decklist to be entered in the tourney! And remember, it's you're responsibility to make sure that your deck is legal and matches your decklist completely, so take care in writing it out! We'll have people who can help you fill it out or check over your deck when you get there, so just let me or one of my Judges know if you need some help.

So, what time do you suggest we be there??
I suggest you be there right at 10am unless you already have your decklist all made out. The cut-off for entrance into Round 1 will be 10:45. Decklists will be required, so be sure to allow time to fill them out. Better yet, use the Decklist Maker I've got a link for above. If you haven't turned in your decklist by 10:45am you can still be entered into the tournament, but you'll start in Round 2, you'll have a first Round loss. We will not delay the tourney for latecomers as it's just not fair to those who get there on time. Bring your DS and your Games to play while you wait! Once your decklist is turned in, you can participate in DS battles, Art contests, or any other activities we might have while you wait.
Better too early than too late! Smiley wink

Who may enter in the Tournament?
Anyone who knows how to play the game may enter, you do not need to be a resident of the City of Madison ... All are welcome, of all ages, from far away, or right in town! If you're new to the game and want to learn more about it, check out the Pokemon Organized Play website for a demo with instructions on how to play so you'll already know how when you get there, because for this particular event, you should at least already know the basics of how to play.

What do I need to bring with me? You'll need to bring your own 60 card legal deck, bring your own damage counters or dice, you may want to bring a sack lunch or money to buy lunch, snacks, or products for sale, but no money is required for entry to this event. You should also know your POP ID number. Many of you are already in my computer from playing in past events of mine, but still, if you're in a League or have an ID number, write it down and bring it with you, and if you're new and don't have a POP ID number yet, no worries... I can get you set up with one right there.

Format: Modified Constructed - Bring your own best HGSS-on Modified decks to play in this tournament.
The sets legal in the New Modified Format have been updated as of Sept 1, 2011. The New Modified format is HeartGold SoulSilver -on. Players may not use cards from Pokémon sets prior to HGSS, with the exception of basic Energy cards and cards that were reprinted in Modified legal sets. Please make sure you're ready with a legal deck and review the legal sets for the Modified Format here.

Remember, this is a Battle Road Event... so keep in mind the following rules and restrictions:
Cards from the World's Championship Decks with the silver borders are NOT allowed in Tournaments.
Sleeves must be single color with no artwork or holographic design, exceptions being the Japanese Pokeball or Pikachu Sleeves, or any of the US Pokemon Sleeves from Prereleases etc.
Cards must be in uniform condition if unsleeved so as not to appear to be marked in any way.
Cheating will be dealt with severly, so don't do it! Always play honorably and fair!

Of course if you have any questions at all as to if your deck is Tourney ready or not, please feel free to stop in a little early and have us check over your deck for you.

If you arrive and find that your deck is not legal to play in this tourney, don't worry, you will still be able to play. There are plenty of interesting starter decks available to purchase right there at Kryptonite Kollectibles, including the five newest Black & White decks, and we may also have a limited number of loaner Preconstructed Theme decks.

This event will most likely will be Age Separated Swiss (everyone will play within their own age group in all the rounds, the number of rounds being determined by number of players in each age group) The Battle Road series will have a K-Value of 4.

Age groups:
Junior Division: Born in 2001 or later
Senior Division: Born in 1997, 1998, 1999, or 2000
Masters Division: Born in 1996 or earlier

Also after the Swiss Rounds, in each of the 3 age groups we will have a Top Cut,
with a Maximum of a cut to Top 4.

This means that after the main tournament, the top ranked players in each of the 3 age groups will continue on to play additional rounds (the number of additional rounds will depend on how many players were in each age group), the winner being determined by winning 2 out of 3 matches within an hour's time, and continuing on to another elimination round until one Battle Road winner in each age group remains..

Are there Prizes?
YES! Of course there are!

Top 4 finishers in each of the three age categories receive the following prizes:

Tentative Time Schedule

(This schedule and number of rounds may certainly vary, depending on the number of players for each age group. This tentative schedule is based on 3 rounds for Jrs, and maybe 5 for Srs and Masters.

Registration…10pm to 10:45 am (if your decklist is turned in after 10:45am, you'll have a Round 1 loss but be in Round 2. I really encourage you to either have your decklist already made out when you arrive, or be sure to arrive by 10am to fill it out there. You don't want to miss out on Round 1!)

Anyone who knows how to play the game may enter, you do not need to be a resident of the City of Rockford ...

You'll need to bring your own 60 card legal deck, bring your own damage counters or dice, you may want to bring a sack lunch or money to buy lunch, snacks, products for sale, or to enter in some of our Side Events after the Main Event, but no money is required for entry to this event.

There are plenty of interesting starter decks available to purchase right there at Top Cut Comics, including the newest Black & White decks.

What are the prizes?

Participants will receive 1 Play! Point just for playing! * click here for info on Play!Points

1st Place
4 Pokémon TCG booster packs
A Gold Victory Cup promo card
2 Championship Points
* Click here for info on Championship Points

2nd Place
4 Pokémon TCG booster packs
A Silver Victory Cup promo card
1 Championship Point

3rd Place
2 Pokémon TCG booster packs
A Bronze Victory Cup promo card
1 Championship Point (if age division attendance is 32 or greater

4th Place
2 Pokémon TCG booster packs
1 Championship Point (if age division attendance is 32 or greater)

But are there Door Prizes? Sure! We'll have an assortment of various items for door prizes! All sorts of different items, including Booster Packs, posters, Deck boxes, Pokemon Beachballs, Pokemon stickers, as well as a Pokemon Hat made by yours truly (I'll post a pic soon!)...these and other various Pokemon items will be randomly given out at various times to random players.

Will there be side events?
Yes! If we have time, we'll have Side Events depending on interest - this may include a Free Modified for small prizes (2 packs for 1st, 1 pack for 2nd), a Theme Deck Challenge, and/or an always fun MUTANT DRAFT - $15 for 4 random packs from any of the legal sets (HGSS - DEX) to build a deck for the tourney(energies provided). In a normal Booster Draft tourney, each player opens one booster pack without revealing its contents to the other players. Each player then selects one card from his or her booster pack and lays it face down in front of him or her. Once a card has been placed in a player’s stack, it is considered selected and cannot be returned to the pack in exchange for another card. Players then pass the remaining cards, face down, to the person on that player’s left. The cards selected by each player should remain private knowledge during the drafting process. Each player continues to select one card from among the cards handed to him or her until all of the cards have been selected.
This process repeats for each remaining booster pack, with the passing pattern alternating from left to right as each new pack is opened. After all of the booster packs have been opened and all of the cards have been selected, each player constructs a 40-card deck, using only the cards he or she selected and any basic Energy cards provided by me. Players have 30 minutes to construct their decks.

Now the cool part about a MUTANT draft is that your evolutions don't have to follow the normal chains... as long as it's within the same type, it's cool to evolve into a different Pokemon line... for example:
if you'd like to, you can go Charmander > Monferno>Typhlosion
Oh the possibilities! You can see why this special type of tournament is a LOT of fun! We'll run 3 round elimination pods with 8 players, and the winner of each round will get a pack.

Remember, it's YOUR Battle Road, I want you to have fun with whatever Side Events you'd like to have. We'll have sign up sheets posted after you get there.

Will there be an Art Contest? Oh sure! I know how you all love to express yourselves with your Pokemon themed artwork! Feel free to bring in your creation or work on it in our Art Area in between rounds. If table space is limited to set up an art area before the event starts, we'll do it in the Junior area after they've finished their main rounds.

'Support the Store' Raffle - As a thank you to Top Cut for hosting our event, I'd like to encourage our players to purchase items from their store. Show me your receipt for items that you purchase there (including Side Events) and I'll give you a Raffle ticket. Spend $5 or more and I'll give you an extra raffle ticket for each extra $5 you spend! The more you spend in the store, the more chances you get! After all the main rounds are finished, I'll draw a lucky number to win 3 booster packs.

Food- I understand that players get cranky and don't function well when they're hungry... no one wants cranky players. So, we will be having a set lunch break to keep you all happy and in a good mood ^_^ There are several fast food places within a mile, including McDonalds, Subway, & Arbys, and also a hugely stocked vending machine full of all kinds of awesome snack foods and drinks.

Chansey's Chance Raffle -
Chansey
Get a raffle ticket for each Chansey card you donate from any set to Devin's Amazing Chansey Collection!
It can be any Chansey card from any set, just as long as it's a Chansey TCG card. The more you donate, the rarer the Chansey, the more raffle tickets and chances to win you'll get. So trade in those spare Chanseys you don't need for some chances to win booster packs!
1 Lucky winner will get 3 booster packs!

Pikas for Packs Raffle -
Pika
Want to contribute to what is probably
the largest collection of Pikachu cards anywhere?

Get a raffle ticket for each Pikachu card you turn in, from any set, for Troy's daughter Danielle's Pikachu Collection.
1 lucky winner will get 3 booster packs!

Can I win a Pokemon Hat made by PokeMama Camille? -
You Betcha! I'll be making another cute fleece Pokemon Hat and you can enter for the chance to win it and wear it proudly! I'll post pictures of it shortly.

If you already have one of my Pokemon hats, how about wear it! I know BUNCHES of us will be wearing ours! Hopefully we can get in another Hat Groupie picture! ^_^ And if you've got other fun Pokemon clothes - hats, shirts, or other specialty items, wear them too! Show your Pokemon some love!!

Tentative Time Schedule

Registration…10pm to 10:45 am (if your decklist is turned in after 10:45am, you'll have a Round 1 loss but be in Round 2. I really encourage you to either have your decklist already made out when you arrive, or be sure to arrive by 10am to fill it out there. You don't want to miss out on Round 1!)

After the Main rounds, we'll post the standings and, depending on the number of players in the age group, the top 2 or 4 ranked players will turn in their Decks to be checked before continuing on to the Top Cuts. Those players will play best 2 of 3 matches in one hour. The winners of that round will advance to the Top 2 Finals to determine the winners, and those who didn't make it will receive 2 booster packs each for 3rd and 4th place..

Again, this is a tentative timetable. We'll try to stick to it as best we can, but of course times may vary due to the actual number of players attending and unforseen events that may delay things.

The number of Swiss rounds run will depend on total attendance at the event, most likely 3 -4 rounds, in the new format, '30 minutes + 3 turns', and you'll play different players for each of the Rounds.

I suggest you be there right at 11:30am unless you already have your decklist all made out. The cut-off for entrance into Round 1 will be noon. Decklists will be required, so be sure to allow time to fill them out. Better yet, use the Decklist Maker I've got a link for above. If you haven't turned in your decklist by noon you can still be entered into the tournament, but you'll start in Round 2, you'll have a first Round loss. We will not delay the tourney for latecomers as it's just not fair to those who get there on time. Bring your DS and your Games to play while you wait! Once your decklist is turned in, you can participate in DS battles, Art contests, or any other activities we might have while you wait.

Championship Points

Championship Points are awarded to players based upon their finish position at Play! Pokémon Championship Series events. Check out the Pokémon TCG Championship Points Structure for more information.

What Can I Do With the Championship Points I’ve Earned?

Championship Points are used to gain entry into high level events, including the 2012 Pokémon World Championships. Check out the Play! Pokémon Event Qualifications document for more information.

What Happens to my Elo Rating Now that Championship Points Are Used for Event Qualification?

Elo ratings will still be maintained on the Pokémon.com website, and may be used to break ties in Championship Points if necessary. The Elo rankings search will still be available for players to see how they stack up against players worldwide.

What are "Best Finish Limits"?

To provide a more even playing field for the largest number of competitors worldwide, we have instituted Best Finish Limits. This means that during an event series, only your Best X (defined here) finishes will count towards your final Championship Points total.

For example, the Best Finish Limit for Battle Roads is 8. If a player participates in 6 Battle Road Autumn events and 5 Battle Road Spring events, only that player’s best 8 finishes from the 11 Battle Roads they attended will count towards their final Championship Points total.

Is There a Limit to How Many Events I Can Play In Per Year?

No!

You can play in as many Battle Road, City Championship, S/P/T Championship and Regional Championships as you wish each year!

Will Video Game Events award Championship Points?

In the 2011-2012 season, Video Game events will award Championship Points, but these points will not be used to qualify players for events. As the Video Game Championship Series expands in the future, Video Game players can expect to see qualifications similar to those being used for TCG events.

Can I Use the Championship Points I Earned at a Video Game Event to Enter a TCG Event?

No.  TCG Championship Points and VG Championship Points are considered separate, and cannot be used across event types.  This means that players cannot use Championship Points earned at the Video Game Regional Championships to gain entry to the TCG World Championships.

Play! Points

Check out the new way to track your rewards for playing Pokémon!

Play! Points reward players for simply doing what they love: playing Pokémon! Every officially sanctioned Pokémon tournament or League awards Play! Points, and larger “destination events” award even more.

How do I earn Play! Points?

Set up a Pokémon Trainer Club account with a Play! Pokémon Player ID, set your preferences to opt in to Play! Pokémon programs, and then participate in Pokémon Leagues and tournaments. That’s it!

How do I opt in to Play! Points?

Log in to your Pokémon Trainer Club account (parents, you’ll need to do this for your kids). Then click “Edit Profile,” scroll to the bottom of the page to the “Play! Pokémon Preferences,” and select “Yes! I want to participate in all available Play! Pokémon Programs.”

What are Play! Points used for?

Play! Points are used to qualify players for high-level events such as National Championships, where we believe it’s important that players have some experience prior to participating. In addition, Play! Points will replace the Player Rewards program. Players will receive rewards based upon their placement on the overall Play! Points totals list.

What happens if I don’t play every round of a tournament?

Play! Points will be awarded only to players who complete at least two rounds of a tournament. Random and awarded byes count towards this two-round total. Forced losses (late arrival) do not.

What are the Play! Points values for Leagues and tournaments?

For the 2012 tournament season, Play! Points values are awarded as follows for Trading Card Game and Video Game events SEPARATELY:

Non-Premier Events:

  • Tournament: 1 per event per month, up to 12 total per year
  • League: 1 per League season, up to 8 total per year

Premier Events:

  • Prerelease Tournament: 1 per event, no limit
  • Battle Road Tournament: 1 per event, no limit
  • City Championships: 2 per event, no limit
  • State/Province/Territory Championships: 3 per event, no limit
  • Regional Championships: 5 per event, no limit
  • National Championships: 10 points
    • Some side events may also award Play! Points
  • World Championships: 20 points
    • Some side events may also award Play! Points

How are Play! Points different from Championship Points?

Championship Points reward players for high placement at tournaments. Play! Points reward players just for playing!

Can I earn Play! Points for organizing or judging tournaments, or running a League?

No. Play! Points are awarded for playing in events. Event staff who have been accepted into the Professor Program will earn Professor Credits for organizational duties. Professors will be able to qualify for events such as U.S. Nationals and other events that require Play! Points based on the Professor Credits they have earned.

As most of you should know by now, Tomorrow Is Yesterday changed ownership as of Jan 1st, 2010.
The store is now known as Top Cut Comics and is owned by Jimmy Ballard from Chicago. Many of you may know Jimmy as the owner of Collect a Card N Comics in Chicago, as well as a past 2nd Place Pokemon World Champion at Worlds 2006. So Jimmy is definitely passionate about Pokemon!

In Loving Memory of Rich...

We at TIY (now TCC) wish to remember our good friend and Poke-Dad, Rich Williams.. He passed away suddenly on Nov 17th, 2007 at only 37 years old. He had been a regular player at TIY in the Tourney and League for many years and many of you have played either him in the Masters or his son Jeremiah in the Junior Division. He was loved by all of us at Tomorrow Is Yesterday and will be missed by all of his friends in the Pokemon community. He traveled to many of the area events, including Nationals, and always helped bring many of the kids to the various events if they needed a ride. He was always there to help loan you a card you needed for your deck or trade for that last needed card in a set. He was kind, funny, generous, and all around one of the greatest guys we have ever known. He was full of the 'Spirit of the Game' and we will all remember him forever with love in our hearts...

About Pokémon Organized Play

Pokémon Organized Play (POP) is an international organization that promotes good sportsmanship and enjoyment of the Pokémon Trading Card Game through competitive and casual play. Leagues and Prerelease events support a casual and fun gaming environment while preparing players for the challenges of our more competitive tournament series. That series of City Championships, State Championships, Regional Championships, National Championships, and Gym Challenges are meant to provide players opportunities to earn great prizes and hone their Pokémon TCG playing skills en route to the pinnacle event of the year, The Pokémon TCG World Championships. If you'd like to know more about Pokémon Organized Play, go ahead and check out the official website for more info.

Pokémon Organized Play is supported by Pokémon USA, Inc, a subsidiary of The Pokémon Company.

About the PokéGym & Team Compendium

Team Compendium serves one major purpose: to create and make easily available a place where any Pokémon player, judge, league leader, or tournament organizer can access and obtain answers to rulings on any question regarding the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG). As long as the Pokémon TCG is supported by The Pokémon Company (no matter who they have distributing it), Team Compendium will be present to get the latest rulings!

The Pokegym is also the place to go for all of the latest in Pokemon news... their forums contain information on upcoming events, the buzz on the latest card gossip, strategies, trading, and of course official rulings for all your TCG questions.

You'll find me as PokeMama there in the PokeGym Forums! Feel free to say hi to me!
